Next month Abbey Systems will be attending the Annual Gas Industry Forum to be held in Queenstown. We will have a stand there and have on display a demonstration cellular RTU as used by a number of customers in New Zealand, including Powerco Gas. Conference details can be found here

Congratulations to Brent Knudsen, Orica NZ, the winner of our Business Card Draw at the recent Water NZ Conference & Trade Show held at Claudelands Event Centre, Hamilton. Brent walked away with an iMake Grainfather Craft Beer Brewing System. Hope you enjoy this particular type of water treatment Brent, and thanks to those of you who stopped by our stand at the show and entered. It's going to be hard to top this as a prize at next year's show.

Innovative Energies & Abbey Systems have teamed up to offer a DNP3 interface for IE’s range of SR750, SR500 and SR250 watt No Break PSUs. Both DNP3/serial & DNP3/TCP protocols are included along with the software configuration tools for set up and support. Any customer's SCADA Master using DNP3 can communicate with these PSUs. Both Innovative Energies L & I model PSUs are supported in single or dual redundant arrangements mounted in 19” rack mount hardware.
There’s a new UHF Analog radio in production, replacing the discontinued Tait Orca we’ve used in Swampfox & Topcat RTUs up until now. It’s been designed for us by Salcom as a drop-in replacement and is fully compatible with existing UHF radio networks that most customers currently use. You will need a new version of "Abbey RTU Updater software" that supports both Salcom and Orca radios to change channels. There are still good quantities of VHF Orcas available.
We are happy to report that a number of our customers are now running Powerlink Telemetry Server in a range of virtualised environments including Oracle Virtualbox and VMware ESX. There are no known limitations to running PL in a virtualised environment and no changes need to be made to support it, so all existing builds should work just fine. You will need to arrange remote com ports if you want to use a System Controller or GSM modem in your virtualised environment. One customer has achieved this using moxa nport units, and we have had success with usb serial adapters in conjunction with usb passthrough mode.
Citrix XenApp enables IT to centralize and manage a single instance of each application in the data center and deliver it to users through any media device. Citrix is used by many customers including Power companies and Councils. Abbey Systems advises that Aspex HMI has now been successfully integrated and deployed in the Citrix XenApp environment for a local District Council. Aspex, being light yet powerful, once deployed over the Citrix user group was able to connect to Powerlink Telemetry Server over the Intranet and display real time and historic data and trends for the user.
WebAlarm has a new lease of life with the latest smartphones. Users have instant access to their SCADA system Alarm List and individual sites, displaying status and measurements of all I/O, including any derived I/O from the site or PLCs connected at the site. WebAlarm doesn't require an App on your cellphone; it just uses your regular phone browser. It's fast to load and access to it is controlled out of a customer's SCADA Master. We've recently made changes to WebAlarm, bringing it in-house rather than having it hosted by an outside ISP. WebAlarm requires a new Powerlink software module loaded onto the SCADA Master and internet access to our Abbey Secure Hub as well. Examples below show smartphone browser screens from Porirua CC's WebAlarm implementation. Of course these screens can also be accessed from desktop PCs, making WebAlarm a very useful operational tool. Please call for pricing.
Increasingly we have a number of customer sites running cellular RTUs on both the Vodafone or Telecom cellular services.
The sites are initially set up to report to a SCADA Master in our offices and once commissioned are transferred to the customer's system via a Virtual SCADA Gateway on the customer's SCADA Network. Cellular RTUs offer customers scope to monitor and control equipment at sites where they have no traditional communications coverage.
